Card readers at the counter
Pair a Stripe card reader, pick one for each computer, and take card and Interac payments without typing the amount twice.
A Stripe card reader on the counter takes the amount straight from OnSite. The customer taps, inserts or swipes, and the payment goes on the invoice with the card it was paid on. Credit cards and Interac debit both work. Nobody keys in an amount, so nothing gets typed wrong.
Readers belong to your own Stripe account, so connect Stripe first. See Card payments online and pay links.
Pair a reader
Owners and managers can add readers. Order one from your Stripe dashboard under Terminal. Stripe's S700 and S710 take cards and Interac debit.
- On the reader, open its settings and generate a pairing code. Stripe's guide for your reader shows where.
- In OnSite, go to Settings › Card payments and find Card readers.
- Type the code into Pairing code.
- Give it a Name the counter will recognise, such as Front counter.
- For your first reader, enter the store's Street, City, Province and Postal code. Stripe needs it once.
- Choose Add the reader.
The reader appears in the list with its model and whether it's Online or Offline. To take one away, choose Remove. You can pair it again later with a new code.
Take a payment on the reader
- Open Take payment as usual. See Take a payment.
- Choose Card reader.
- Check the Amount, then choose Charge and the amount on the reader.
- The window shows "Tap, insert or swipe on" and the reader's name. Hand the reader to the customer.
When it's approved, the payment is recorded with the card brand and last four digits, and you carry on to the receipt. An Interac payment is recorded as debit. If the card is declined, you'll see why. Try again, or take it another way.
You can split a bill between the reader and other methods. Enter less than the full amount, and the rest carries over.
Cancel a payment on the reader
Choose Cancel while it's waiting. OnSite checks with Stripe one last time first, so a card that went through at the last second is still recorded and never charged twice.
Pick the reader for each computer
With two or more readers, Take payment shows a Reader list. Pick the one beside this computer. The computer remembers it, so you only choose once.
Deposits and refunds
Repair deposits can go on the reader too, including at check-in. See Deposits on repairs. Card refunds go back through Stripe, and Interac refunds happen on the reader with the customer's card. See Refund a payment.
Try it in test mode
When Stripe is connected with test keys, type simulated-wpe as the pairing code to add a pretend reader. While a payment waits on it, Simulate a tap acts as the customer's card. No real money moves.
